Levi's story

Levi's love of building started when he was 14. Every day after school he walked home and picked up a tool to help his dad build the family's new home. By the time the last nail went in, he was hooked.

Building runs in the family. Levi is a third-generation builder. His grandfather, Calvin Tippetts, built and sold homes and had a house in the very first Utah Valley Parade of Homes. His dad, Kevin Tippetts, served as head contractor for Habitat for Humanity in Utah County.

Levi learned the trade framing houses for Scott Bradford, a family friend and co-owner of Acadian Builders. Before long he started his own framing company and built homes and businesses across Utah, California and Idaho.

Years on the job taught him what makes carpentry faster and more accurate, so he built a better tool himself. Levi invented and patented the CutBoss, a tool for marking and cutting repetitive pieces fast and accurately, from deck blocking to framing and finish carpentry.

Then he found decks, and he hasn't looked back. A deck is where families and friends gather outdoors, and Levi loves the details that turn one into a beautiful part of the home: a clean picture-frame border, stairs that flow to the yard, lighting that makes evenings last.

He also loves the people side of building. For four years Levi hosted the podcast for the Utah Valley Home Builders Association, which connected him with the community and his fellow builders. Today he's a TimberTech Platinum Pro and was recently invited to join the Owens Corning OC Lumber Pro Build Team.

And the family tradition keeps going. Levi's son, Phinn Tippetts, is the fourth generation of Tippetts builders. He started out as Levi's "Cortex guy," coming out to job sites and carefully filling every screw hole with Cortex plugs so the finished deck shows nothing but clean boards. This past summer Phinn took on much more, building decks for TC Decks right alongside his dad.
